Modernisation
Challenges
The integration between business and information technology places great demands on a company as business practices change and information technology constantly evolves. The technological challenges also increase over time as IT systems are repeatedly modified and adapted, while also becoming outdated.
It systems in optimal state
Managing IT systems requires periodic modernisation. New requirements a company asks of its IT systems can be handled via normal maintenance and adaptation for a period, but over time these systems will become outdated and maintaining them will no longer be economically justifiable. A modernisation phase is the next step to keep these systems in an optimal state. It is usually also a comprehensive task in terms of time and functionality.
Reuseablitity
Modernisation is primarily about reusing existing functionality in one form or another, and ensuring that IT systems can fulfil the company's expectations in terms of flexibility, security, maintenance, etc. At the same time, one has to ensure that the systems coexist in an optimal way and supplement various front end systems, including Web and standard systems.
What is modernisation?
Modernisation can be anything from Black Box modernisation (Screen scraping, CGI integration (Common Gateway Interface), XML wrapping or OO wrapping), to restructuring, changing architecture and platform, and conversion.
